Frontline DIGNITY was featured in the following Central Oregon Daily article: Bend community attends training on responding to ICE near schools
BEND, Ore. — Community members spent Sunday learning how to respond if Immigration and Customs Enforcement shows up near local schools.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the Oregon for All Network hosted the free “Know Your Rights” training at Central Oregon Community College, teaching attendees how to protect immigrant students and families.
The four-hour session covered safety planning, on-site responses, after-action support, and basic legal rights. Participants also learned how to organize and support communities affected by enforcement activity.
“The more that the community knows now about these issues, the more prepared they could be in the months and years to come,” said Juan Proaño, CEO of LULAC.
Jaime Martinez, executive director of Front Line Dignity, said the training gave attendees tools to navigate complex situations. “They got a lot of practical instruments about what their rights are, especially as it pertains to schools, as well as how important it is to understand what certain legal terms mean,” he said.
A local Latino community member said the turnout mattered. “I’m so glad there was a really good turnout because the educators show that they care, and that allows not only students to trust their educators but parents and the public in general,” she said. “As a member of the Latino community, it was important for me to show up here because I relate to some of these stories.”
Organizers said the goal was to ensure every student and family feels safe and supported, no matter their immigration status.
